You also talked about 5 Sqn. I was also 2 i/c of 5, and moved them down from Dortmund to Iserlohn, where my two children were born. I then moved the squadron up to Paderborn, but only had a couple of months there before returning to UK. I dont know whether any of this is of interest, but hope it does.

with the fighting 5th i did the following tours.

op Palatine 16, bosnia apr-sept 2002 as the RE CS SQN for theater and spet 8 weeks as the MND SW mine cell advisor and driver

Op Fresco 2003 (no 1 hoseman on green godess in bradford, living and operating out of belle view TA centre)

Op Telic 4, Fortress lines (former sadam naval academy), southern basra, iraq apr-nov 2004

when i moved to warminster we were the LWC BG close support troop providing engr support to all trg exercises on the spta including playing opfor for the optag that was on and all major trg exercises both infantary and armoured, light and heavy roles.

i loved every day in gods chosen corps and given half the chance i would be back in like a shot.
obviously up there are a few things most modern soldiers do all the time. canada, kenya, belize, and of course who can forget bridge camps in weymouth at wyke regis on chiesle beach!

C3S is command, control and communications also knowen as sigs, and that was all clansman, i was a a key part of instigatig Bowman into the fighting 5th when the role name changed and is now kowen as CIS (commnuication information systems) as the only Sqn Apps spec and Class 1 sigs, with advanced bowman signaller and HQ user. I was the key to keeping bowman running during its first trg exercise for the fighting 5th in canda shortly afterwards. which then follow a posting out to the land warfare center just before deployment on telic 10. i was devistated! just after my posting the fighting 5th were converted to the dark side and bacame dare i say it, 5 Armd Egr Sqn!!!!!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!! so no longer cheese eating fieldies and now armd engrs! what a waste!
then 2 years of exercises, bridge building, construction tasks and the enhancements of SPTA and imber village.
as you can see a very busy but fufilling career even if it was 9 years short.
i hope that can help a little bit and gives a brief background of my past career and life not just in the corps, but the fighting 5th where i spent most my career.

  1. I feel like a bit of a sprog as I was in 5 Sqn from 1985 until 89 then went to RHQ 26. but here goes anyway. Iserlohn or the "Fish" as we called it (don't know why) was the best posting of my 24 years in the Corps. We were a normal RE Field Squadron then, like hell we were!Blue vest runs up the Bismark, Airmobile Trials with 6 Brigade with all of our armour following by road with us humping along with the Infantry bergens loaded with barmines and carrying 2 GPMG's per section and humping spare Milan Missiles for the Infantry, It was brilliant!, flying ahead of the other Brigades battle groups and Engineering the ground for our heavier Armour to to lay AVLB or MGB etc. My Kids were brought up there and my grand duaghter was one of the last babies to be born in the BMH.
Fond memories of Great times with fantastic people.

  2. Don, you are a sprog.
What do you mean flying ahead....we never made it once, we were always shot down. I really enjoyed it though because as harbour area
nco with 4 APC's and 3 CVRT Spartans we managed to take out 17 Leopard tanks with 4 LMG's, 3 GPMG's and 2 thunderflashes. They held their "O"group outside of the farm yard that we were hiding in. All in a days work.
